Anthropic's $1.5B Copyright Settlement: What Authors Need to Know

March 15, 2026 · TrainedOnYou Staff

A plain-English guide to the Bartz v. Anthropic settlement — what happened, who qualifies, the key deadlines, and what authors should do now.

If you're an author whose books were published before 2023, there's a chance you're entitled to money from a $1.5 billion copyright settlement — and you may not even know it.

Here's what you need to know about the Bartz v. Anthropic copyright settlement, who qualifies, and what your options are.

What Happened

Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, allegedly downloaded approximately 400,000 copyrighted books from pirated datasets called LibGen (Library Genesis) and PiLiMi on August 10, 2022. These books were allegedly used as training data for Claude without compensating copyright holders.

A class action lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California. After extensive litigation, the parties reached a proposed settlement of $1.5 billion — one of the largest copyright settlements in history.

The settlement covers authors and rights-holders whose works appear on the "Anthropic Works List" — the official dataset of books identified as part of the infringing training data.

Who Qualifies

To be eligible for a settlement payment, you generally need to meet all of the following:

Your book is on the Anthropic Works List. The Works List contains roughly 400,000 titles. You can search it at TrainedOnYou.com/check-your-works. Works are identified by ISBN and ASIN, so you'll need those to search accurately.

You hold copyright to the work. This includes authors who own their copyright, publishers who were assigned copyright, and estates or heirs of deceased authors.

Your work has a valid US Copyright Office registration. Not just automatic copyright protection — a formal registration with the Copyright Office (copyright.gov).

You filed a claim before March 30, 2026. This is the most important deadline. If you missed it, your options are limited. However, publishers and literary agents sometimes file claims on behalf of their authors — so it's worth checking even if you didn't personally file.

How Much Could You Receive

The $1.5 billion fund, after attorney fees (reduced from 25% to 12.5% as of March 23, 2026), leaves roughly $1.3 billion for distribution to claimants.

As of October 2025, only about 58,788 of the roughly 490,000 eligible works had claims filed — just 12%. If this number holds, each qualifying work could receive $1,500 to $5,600 or more.

Authors with many qualifying works — especially academic authors, prolific novelists, or publishers with large catalogs — could receive significant total payments.

The Key Dates

  • August 10, 2022 — Date Anthropic allegedly downloaded the pirated datasets
  • March 30, 2026 — Claims filing deadline (now passed)
  • April 22, 2026 — Final approval hearing before Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin
  • Late 2026 – 2027 — Estimated period for settlement distributions

What Authors Should Do Now

1. Search the Works List. Use our search tool to see if your books appear on the Anthropic Works List. Even if you didn't file yourself, you may be able to verify whether a publisher or agent filed on your behalf.

2. Check your claim status. If you're represented by a literary agent or publisher, contact them to ask whether they filed claims for your works before the March 30, 2026 deadline.

3. Consider your options. If you have a valid claim, you have two choices: (a) wait for the settlement distribution, which is expected sometime in 2027, or (b) sell your claim now for an immediate cash offer.

4. Consult an attorney if needed. For complex situations — large catalogs, estates, rights disputes — it's worth getting legal advice about your specific circumstances.

The Option to Sell Now

Many authors prefer not to wait 12–18 months for payment. If you have a valid claim, you can sell your right to receive the settlement distribution to a litigation finance company like TrainedOnYou.

You receive cash within 5 business days of signing. It's real money now, not an uncertain payment in 2027.

Whether selling makes sense depends on your financial situation, how many works you have, and how much the timing matters to you. There's no obligation to sell. But the option exists, and for many authors, it's the right choice.
